Step 01
How It All Works Together
One offer, one journey — each channel plays a different role.
The donor journey runs in five stages. Awareness finds people who don't know you yet (YouTube Ads, TikTok Ads, organic social, influencer). Consideration meets real search intent and builds proof (Google Ads, organic search, Meta retargeting). Conversion carries the offer through to a decision (Meta Ads, email, SMS, WhatsApp). Retention turns one gift into many (email, WhatsApp, SMS). Advocacy turns donors into promoters (influencer, partnerships and PR, organic social) — and referrals feed straight back into awareness, lowering the cost of every future campaign.
How this maps to the other playbooks
Stages 1–3 are the Acquisition Playbook. Stages 4–5 are the Retention Playbook. This page bridges the two.
Checklist
- One offer defined before any channel planning
- Each active channel assigned to a journey stage
- No stage left without at least one channel
- Advocacy loop connected back into awareness
- Budget allocated by stage, not by channel habit
Do
- Use paid for reach and organic for trust
- Let owned channels do the converting and retaining
- Treat earned channels as the compounding layer
Don't
- Expect one channel to do the whole journey
- Run channels in isolation with separate offers
- Judge awareness channels on last-click donations
KPIs to track
Donations by journey stage
Where the funnel is thin
Blended cost per donor
Whether the channel mix is efficient overall
Referral and repeat share of revenue
If advocacy is feeding back into awareness
Troubleshooting
Lots of reach, few donations
The conversion stage is missing owned-channel follow-up — add email, SMS or retargeting
Rising acquisition costs each campaign
Retention and advocacy aren't running — build the loop back into awareness
